SUBGENUS Pleurothallis SECTION Macrophyllae-Fasciclatae Lindl. 1859
Characterized by the single flowered inflorescence with the peduncle hidden within a spathe, the usually short pedicels, the entire, fringed to pubescent petals that are not sigmoid in outline and a thick, obtuse, oblong to transverse lip and a sorter, broader column with an apical anther and stigma that is almost always bilobed. This subsection and amphygiae are not distinctly separated in various borderline species and for this reason they later were separated by Luer into the genus Acronia [2005] with three sections, Acronia, Amphygia and Macrophyllae-fasciculatae.
