Found in Oxapampa department of Peru in dwarf forests at elevations around 2000 meters as a small sized, cool to cold growing epiphyte with erect, sub-oblique,
sharply winged, broader at the junction with
the leaf ramicaul enclosed above the
base by a thin tubular sheath and carrying a single, apical, erect, coriaceous, narrowly
elliptical, acute, with the margins
continuous with the wings of the ramicaul, sessile base leaf that blooms in the fall and winter on a borne
from the apex of the ramicaul at the base of
the leaf, subtended by a thin spathe, peduncle .08" [2 mm] long,
congested, .16" [4 mm] long overall, successively single, 2 flowered inflorescence with inflated floral bracts.
"Acianthera ruizii is most similar to
P tokachii Luer from which it is distinguished by the green-yellowish to dark reddish
flowers (vs. dark brown), petals with a prominent
longitudinal carina along one margin above the middle (vs. none), and ovate lip, with the sides not
deflexed and a pair of low calli extending from
above the basal lobes to the apex (vs. ovoid lip,
strongly deflexed sides and with a pair of tall calli
extending to the middle third of the lamina), ovary
smooth (vs. pubescent) and column pubescent
(vs. smooth).
