Found in Trinidad and Tobago, French Guiana, Surinam, Venezuela, Peru, and Brazil in rain forests at elevations around 200 to 1500 meters as a miniature to just medium sized, hot to cool growing epiphyte with erect to ascending ramicauls enveloped basally by 2 basal sheaths and carrying a single, apical, erect, coriaceous, oblong, oblong-elliptic, ovate-oblong to ovate, narrowing below into the petiolate base leaf that blooms in the spring on 1 to 3, from near the base, 2 to 10" [5 to 25 cm] long, many flowered inflorescence.
Stelis papaquerensis is superficially similar to S capijumensis but it has by broader sepals that are connate to near the middle into a conical base, and shortly unguiculate petals. Also superficially similar to S freyi but it differs in the single inflorescence that surpasses the leaf more than twice its length. The many-flowered raceme is distichous with most flowers open simultaneously. The sepals are deeply connate to create a conical base to the flower. The sevenveined dorsal sepal is larger than four-veined lateral sepals. The rounded margin of the petals is broadly thickened. The lip is type A and rounded at the apex with three small calli on the dorsum.
