Found in Colombia and Ecuador in cloud forests at elevations of 1500 to 2200 meters as a small sized, cool to cold growing epiphyte found low down on tree trunks with erect, stout rramicauls enveloped basally by 2 to 3, loose, tubular sheaths and carrying a single, apical, erect, thinly coriaceous, carinate, elliptical, subacute, gradually narrowing below into the conduplicate, subpetiolate base leaf that blooms in the late fall and winter on a descending, stout, few bracted, green with white flecked, successively few flowered, racemose, 6 to 8" [15 to 20 cm] long inflorescecne arising from low on the ramicaul with tubular floral bracts and carrying the large bizarre flowers below the leaves.
