Found in Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia and Ecuador in wet montane forests at elevations around 1300 to 1600 meters as a small sized, cool growing epiphyte with glabrous, terete ramicauls enveloped completely by several tubular sheaths and carrying a single, apical, coriaceous, elliptical, apically tridentate, obtuse to round, gradually narrows below into the conduplicate, petiolate base leaf that blooms in the spring and fall from an annulus with to 6, fasciculate, racemose, to 10" [25 cm] long, several to many [10 to 15] flowered inflorescence.
"This species is the Central American counterpart of P sclerophylla differing in the lip lined by three longitudinal calli while the lip of P sclerophylla has a single caria below the middle although traces of the lateal pair are often visible." Luer 1999
