Common Name The Scaly Masdevallia [refers to the scaly dorsal sepal]

Found only in Colombia's western cordillera in cloud forests at elevations of 2000 to 2200 meters as a mini-miniature sized, cold growing, caespitose epiphyte with stout erect ramicauls that are enveloped by 2 to 3 loose, tubular, sheaths carrying a single, apical, erect, coriaceous, narrowly obovate, obtuse leaf that blooms in the spring on a congested, 6" to 12" [15 to 30 cm] long, successively many [12] flowered inflorescence arising from low on the ramicaul with a basal sheaths and thin, papery, imbricating, white floral bracts that holds the single successive flower well above the leaves.
